What is Helminthix?
Helminthix is an initiative to connect AI biopharma, biotech, parasitology research, high-throughput screening, viability assays, medicinal chemistry, funders and partners in endemic regions. We focus on the missing middle between good parasite biology and medicines that can actually be developed, tested and used.
Who is Helminthix for?
We are for researchers, assay labs, AI and drug-discovery companies, product-development partners, animal-health groups, funders, public-health teams and endemic-region institutions who want helminth drug discovery to move faster and more fairly.
Why focus on helminth diseases?
Parasitic worm infections affect some of the poorest communities in the world and can cause anaemia, malnutrition, impaired growth, reduced school attendance, disability, pregnancy risk, livestock losses and long-term economic harm. In highly endemic settings, infection can affect most children or most people in a village. The need is large, but the medicine pipeline has remained thin.
How will affected communities be involved?
We believe drug development should be integrated with the communities it is meant to serve. That means listening early to people, clinicians, public-health teams and researchers in affected regions; designing product profiles around real use; and avoiding models where communities are treated only as trial sites, data sources or passive recipients.
Is it realistic to develop multiple cheap and effective helminth medicines?
Yes. Many helminth medicines already come from repurposed or veterinary-origin compounds, and modern AI, comparative genomics, phenotypic screening and medicinal chemistry can make discovery faster and more systematic. Our view is that each major parasite should eventually have multiple effective drugs, backups and combinations, not just one ageing backbone treatment.
Why is repurposing important?
Repurposing can sometimes shorten development because a molecule may already have safety, manufacturing, exposure or formulation data from another indication. It is not a shortcut around evidence: helminth disease still requires parasite-specific efficacy, dosing, safety and access work. But repurposing can make neglected-disease development more feasible.
What does safe and precise drug development mean?
It means matching the drug to the parasite, life stage, patient group and implementation context as carefully as possible. We support approaches that test viability, fecundity, development, resistance risk, pharmacology and real-world treatment needs, rather than assuming that one broad deworming strategy is enough for every worm disease.
How do you think about affordability?
Medicines for helminth diseases must be priced so that everyone who needs them can realistically access them. We support development models that plan for affordability, generic or scalable manufacturing, public-interest licensing, donation or procurement pathways, and transparent access commitments from the beginning rather than as an afterthought.
Where should resources be allocated?
As much resource and decision-making power as possible should sit close to affected communities. That includes endemic-region laboratories, clinical teams, public-health programmes, community health workers, implementation partners and local research institutions. Better medicines should also strengthen local capacity, not only external discovery platforms.
Does Helminthix replace mass drug administration or public-health programmes?
No. Existing public-health programmes are essential and have prevented enormous harm. Helminthix is complementary: we focus on expanding the medicine cabinet, improving resistance-aware discovery, and helping future treatments support control, elimination and individual patient care more effectively.
Does Helminthix own the pipeline assets listed on the site?
No. The Pipeline page is a field landscape. It maps approved drugs, clinical programmes, repurposing opportunities, gene targets and early discovery signals so that researchers and partners can see where the gaps and opportunities are. Inclusion does not imply ownership, endorsement or a formal collaboration.
